Bread for the city organization has been here in Washington, DC for almost 40 years. Since 2010, its facilities and services have grown considerably. Bread for the City has to keep up with an increasing demand that’s part of a nationwide trend. High unemployment and slow growth since the beginning of the US recession in 2008 has increased the number of people needing emergency food aid and food benefits program to record levels. Sharon Gruber has watched families’ needs shoot up in the last year. Across the nation more families are facing the hardship of putting food on the table than ever before–a considerable jump from 2010. The US Department of Agriculture reports that nearly 6 percent of Americans, about 17 million, suffered ‘very low food security’ last year, a rise of 800000 over the previous year. Those highest affected come from single parent households in the Black and Hispanic communities. The food security report was released a day after the federal government reported a record 47 million Americans were enrolled for food stamps in June. It’s a spike by 173000 people from May. Even though Bread for the City is experiencing a record demand and has already expanded its services to match the pace, Gruber says another expansion is planned. As the US economy struggles to recover, families facing economic hardship and antagonizing hunger are left to do the same.
